After completing the basic schooling, many of the youth living have limited opportunities to work because of lack of training opportunities; they represent the fastest growing segment of Kenya society and are the present and the future. However, young people in Kenya today face mounting socio and economic challenges. Investing in youth is crucial. Preparing them for an active role in sustainable development through educational and capacity building programmes that designed and driven by young people themselves.

BACKGROUND

In Kenya youth under the age of 20 represent 59% of a population of 25 million Six and a half million are between the ages of 10 and 19. Youth account for about 55 % of the unemployed in Kenya. After completing the basic schooling, many of the youth living have limited opportunities to work because of lack of training opportunities; they represent the fastest growing segment of Kenya society and are the present and the future. However, young people in Kenya today face mounting socio and economic challenges. Investing in youth is crucial. Preparing them for an active role in sustainable development through educational and capacity building programmes that designed and driven by young people themselves.  

UN-HABITAT is supporting a skills development programme that benefits young people living in slums and informal settlements. This capacity building programme aims to improve the livelihood of youth living and working in urban environments through the provision of practical training that will lead to income generation activities and certification.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Core Activities (SNP)

  • Finalization of project structure and legal relationships
  • Finalization of project team
  • Preparation of the constitution/Articles of Agreement for the Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV).
  • Consideration of suitable technologies and project delivery methodologies
  • Development of  the delivery strategy
  • Finalization of any residual statutory issues such as tax incentives
  • Support resource mobilization for project implementation.
  • Organize continuous consultative meetings with the various stakeholders to rebuild momentum for the implementation of the project
  • Reconfirm the interest by key partners to continue supporting the project development and implementation.
  • Evaluating and documenting the model as a best practice for youth empowerment and engagement for regional and global dissemination

Core Activities (Kisii Solid Waste Management project)

  • Analyze policy, organizational and financial structure in the county and national government
  • Survey solid waste generation and characteristics analysis
  • Analyze solid waste collection status
  • Analyze solid waste recycling status
  • Analyze solid waste dumping status
  • Formulate waste stream
  • Summarize solid waste management challenges and youth employment challenges in Kisii County.

Core Tasks Under Youth Unit

  • Develop a Kenyan survey on Youth, Peace and Security in relation to the coming August 2017 elections.
  • Support the implementation of the Innovate Counties Challenge in close collaboration with the existing innovate Kenya Centers in various counties.
  • Follow up with Youth Now and provide a detailed narrative and financial report of the activities so far implemented, currently on going and the future programmes.
  • Support the proposed partnership with Kenyan Enterprise Development Fund with clear interventions and outputs for the Youth Unit
  • Support the Governing Council preparatory activities as maybe assigned.

 QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Higher diploma or its equivalent in development studies or related field.

Work Experience

  • At least 7 years’ Experience working directly working with youth or youth agencies and Extensive  local knowledge and  experience working with youth programmes in Kenya

Language

  • Excellent in English both written and oral

REMUNERATION
Payments will be based on deliverables over the consultancy period. There are set remuneration rates for consultancies. The rate is determined by functions performed and experience of the consultant. The fees will be paid as per agreement.
