An international Sub-Regional Focal Point for Urban Resilience who is familiar and experienced with the subject and fully operational in the three working languages in Southern Africa (English, French and Portuguese) is needed to coordinate the implementation of the pilot exercises of the CityRAP Tool in Mozambique, Malawi and Madagascar and the consolidation of the tool methodology, as well as to assist in the delivery of DIPECHO IV, DiMSUR and CA Projects work-plan in 2015 and 2016 at regional level, including implementation and reporting of key activities.

An international Architect & Urban Planner who is familiar with the subject and with experience in the field is needed to implement and support the technical team in Mozambique, assisting in the delivery of the DIPECHO IV project, provide backstopping to the Early Recovery shelter activities in coordination with IOM and support the delivery of the Cities Alliance Project work-plan in 2015 and 2016, including implementation and reporting of key activities.

The Urban Planning and Design Branch of UN-Habitat supports countries in developing urban planning methods and systems that address current urbanization challenges. It promotes urban planning approaches to address rapid urban growth and urban transformation processes in countries with rapid urbanization processes and where cities face a backlog of services and housing.

East African countries have the highest annual urbanization rate in the world, estimated at above 4%. The annual demand for new urban houses is estimated to be on average at 100,000 units in each country. This corresponds with an estimated 40,000 new housing units, supplied by the market, by National Housing Corporations, real estate developers, private contractors and individuals.

The Afghanistan Urban Peacebuilding Programme (AUPP) is predicated on the vital linkage between state-society relations, local government capacity, and basic service provision in strengthening safety and security. In order to support the country level interventions envisaged in GLTN Phase 2, UN-Habitat is seeking an English-French translator that would enable a wider audience reach in the targeted Francophone countries in Africa such as the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

The urban space needs to be rethought in order to optimize flow of traffic, but also to increase and encourage the use of non-motorized transport, such as pedestrian movement or cycling. Streets need to be adapted, with walkways, crossings, and cycling lanes. Transport junctions need to be established to create connection points between different transport modes, thus facilitating access to and extending the range of a public transport system, on both the macro level – the city, the region and beyond – and micro level – the neighbourhood.
