The quality of urban places in cities is typically not the product of a single intervention but results from the accumulation over time of a complex combination of factors, behaviours and decisions of multiple stakeholders.   “Urban MAESTRO” will look at the ways European cities are being designed and financed, with a deliberate focus on those approaches where public authorities act in a semi-formal or informal capacity as enablers or brokers rather than through regulatory or direct investment powers. 

Currently, UN-Habitat’s portfolio and interventions are being aligned with the changed political and socio-economic context in Somalia in general and towards response to the needs of new member states and urban centres affected by rapid growth and large scale displacement in southern and central Somalia in particular.

In Afghanistan, it is evident that not only the prolonged conflict but also the recurrent disasters have put the fragile county in a vicious circle of underdevelopment. The risk of natural disasters has been accelerated by the climate change, and rapid urbanization with the influx of Returnees and IDPs expose those vulnerable urban populations more to hazards because of insufficient basic services, housing, and infrastructures.
