  • HabPost - Issue 018 (October 22nd, 2020)

75 years ago, the UN Charter was signed. It would set the stage for years of cooperation towards peace and security, and make the United Nations a catalyst for what we now know as sustainable development.

Somewhere in between, urbanization and its impacts started to gain traction in the UN agenda. The United Nations Human Settlements Programme was born, and in 2015 the UN made cities and communities a centrepiece of the Sustainable Development Goals framework.

Today, our leaders reflect on the UN@75, the role of UN-Habitat, and what we might see next. Read or listen to their statements in this issue.

  • HabPost - Issue 017 (October 8th, 2020)

Celebrations of the World Habitat Day are now behind us, but not without a bang. The engagement and commitment by many to work together to contribute to a better future where the right to adequate housing is fully realized has never been stronger. Regardless of the pandemic, events were held, and cities and key stakeholders came together. New avenues were found to engage with one another and to continue to raise awareness of the importance of housing for development and for protection against crises such as the current pandemic.

In this issue, we encourage you to keep spreading the word, and provide you with new tools to better relate to the New Urban Agenda, at the core of our work.

In addition to today’s issue, we will be commemorating the work of the organization closer to the actual anniversary of the UN on 24 October: the 22 October issue of HabPost will unveil the message our Executive Director has for us all, and we’ll also be talking with our Deputy Executive Director using a new, interactive format — we tell you more in this issue. As for today, we share with you in advance of this special issue on the UN@75 the thoughts and hopes of many colleagues across our agency — we’d like to thank everyone for their precious participation!

We’re almost halfway through September, and this means two things: Urban October is around the corner, and time flies. A lot of us started to work from home in March and have been connecting to meetings and events from home. Urban October and its run-up will be no exception, with many events taking place online. In this issue, we give you a brief overview of what Urban October is all about and tell you about the ways you can join. There’s also quite a few events looking at sustainable and smart cities taking place around the world in the coming two weeks; you can read about them and learn how to participate in the Events section.
