UNON COVID-19 Update: April 30

30 Apr 2020

From the Director-General

Dear Colleagues,

I would like to take this opportunity to reach out to you, and particularly those of Muslim faith - to wish you comfort and peace during this Holy month of Ramadan. This month is traditionally a time of introspection on the values of self-discipline, prayer, sacrifice, compassion and humility.

This month is going to be different from previous observances of the Holy month, without the gatherings at the end of the day for prayers and Iftar due to the challenging times the world is facing with the COVID-19 crisis. Nonetheless we are together in spirit, and we stand in solidarity observing the ongoing guidance that we have been receiving from our colleagues in WHO, the Government of Kenya, and our own Joint Medical Service (JMS) on how to protect ourselves and others.

During these trying times, the charitable deeds performed during Ramadan are more needed than ever before. Dear colleagues, this is truly the time when the golden rule – to love your neighbour as yourself – should be in the forefront of our thoughts, and we should move from thought to acts of kindness and generosity, to embody the spirit of this season of giving and charity. As I mentioned before – in my experience – even the simple act of a call to our colleagues to check in on them can go a long way in lifting spirits during this time.

While we still have a long road ahead to overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic, may this time of Ramadan truly strengthen our will to walk through this journey together.

Please take care of yourselves and stay safe, stay healthy, and stay blessed. Ramadan Mubarak!
